Description
Often accompanied by distinct patters and motifs with geometric compositions and tribal characteristics, the Kazak rug has been a staple in the tradition of both the Old World and new. Beginning in ancient times, Kazak rugs have added luxury, prestige, warmth and comfort to homes. Originally woven with strands of silver and gold, Kazak rugs were, at one point, symbols of status. They were placed in churches, palaces and within homes of the elite class. They were not only used as floor coverings but they often hung from walls and placed on the throne or at the feet of the king. The rug is frequented by medallions, rosettes, hooked polygons, birds, and trees. Like most Persian rugs, Kazaks are hand-knotted and are known for their high knot density, a representation of the difficult craftsmanship that goes into creating these works of art. The higher the knot density, the sharper the image being made.
